Norma Hurtado – My experience as an Astro-Engineer and METIS, the Mid-infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph
“My experience as an Astro-Engineer and METIS, the Mid-infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph”
NOVA Optical & Infrared Instrumentation Group at ASTRON. Dwingeloo, Netherlands
I am a Chilean engineer and researcher, from Antofagasta, with more than 20 years of experience in the Astronomy field, I work in an area known now as Astro-Engineering. I will start presenting my educational background and continue with my working experience from telescope and instruments operations in La Silla and Paranal observatories to the development of instrumentation for existing and future telescopes in Chile. I will finish presenting METIS, the Mid-infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph, one of the three first light instruments for the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). I will also describe my current work, in the Netherlands, as METIS System Engineer at NOVA, the lead institute in charge of its development. The ELT with its 39 m primary mirror, will be the largest optical telescope in the world. It is planned to be operational in 2024 in Cerro Armazones, Paranal Observatory, Chile.
