The Instituto de Astronomia, Universidad Catolica del Norte, Antofagasta, Chile, offers a 2 years Post-doc position sponsored by European Southern Observatory (Comité Mixto ESO – Gobierno de Chile) in the field of Athmospheric Research with Astronomical Facilities: “One man´s noise is the other man´s data.”
Large astronomical facilities (e.g. VLT) produce large amounts of data that are valuable for studies of the Earth’s atmosphere. While we focused now on chemo luminescence and OH excitation profiles in high altitudes the project here is intended to go to high resolution CRIRES data (MIR) to investigate the molecular ingredients in the lower layers. The main objective is to investigate, based on archival data, the evolution of various molecules with season, weather and moreover climate changes due to global warming and link parameters from astrophysical observations to those from the Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS) at the NOAA. In addition, the applicant should also apply to ESO facilities for original research projects, collaborate with the European group of the PI and ESO staff involved in the project already, and establish new collaborations to also in this field working groups in Chile. UCN also has a 20-30% timeshare on all the telescopes at the Observatorio Cerro Armazones of the Ruhr-Universitat Bochum.
Applicants should have experience with ESO data products and data reduction.
Send applications (CV and two letters of recommendations) to Stefan.Kimeswenger@gmail.com by 1st December (or therafter until the position is filled).
Designated starting date 1st March 2015.
